Meet Our Owner

Katrina

Hi there, I’m Katrina. I’m originally from Calgary, but moved to Ottawa in 2011 after living overseas for eight years, first in London, England, then in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. My time in Europe changed and influenced my tastes in design and interiors as well as inspired me to work with furniture. I was drawn to upcycling old furniture as a way to cut down on waste and stop perfectly good furniture from winding up in landfills.
In my previous life, I worked in the media, mostly for radio and TV. But, after discovering Chalk Paint™, and then meeting Annie Sloan, my life path changed dramatically. I took the leap of faith and started Malenka Originals. Today, I’m committed to spreading my love of refreshing furniture by teaching workshops, providing free demos and supporting local charities.
These days, in any spare moment between being the mother of two beautiful children, I can be found at the shop, running workshops, and helping others learn how to refresh furniture.
